The Gratefulness Project

Is it hard to be grateful?

Sounds weird – of course it is not hard, right?! But think about it. There is a difficult situation in your life and do you always find something to be grateful for then?

Since having tinnitus I think I haven´t really been grateful. I am trying to find three things every day I was grateful for. But guess what, a lot of times I don´t and I just get super frustrated.

On my healing journey I came across so many articles about how gratitude can change everything. How it can be a turning point. It changes the way you see things as you realize that you have good things in your life. So you start noticing the postive things more and more and the negative ones less and less. It is a concept to find happiness.

Read here my article about happiness and how people have managed to raise their overall level of happiness:  https://thetinnituslife.com/2018/03/21/happy-with-tinnitus-or-happy-even-though-having-tinnitus/

I have been someone who focuses on what goes wrong and every hurdle in the way instead of what goes well and what I have acieved. So I have been wanting to change that.

In order to do so I challanged myself to find everyday one thing I´m gratful for and to post it on my Instagram story. Here you can see my result and what I think how the project influenced me. The first thing I learned is, that I need to go back to school to learn to count. It seems like I didn´t pay enough atention to the numbers.

Here we go…

Day 1:

It took me a long time to really appreciate it when I have some time alone. I usually felt really lonely and just not  complete. But now I really love spending time on my own doing my own things. Of course I am always happy when my boyfriend comes back from a trip and we can spend together. Now of course it is quality time and not „afraid- to-be-alone-time“, which is so much better!

Day 2

I bought this sticker at an organic market, I was just happy to have found something like this here in Cusco and use it to decorate my computer. I actually got super excited about it, as it is totally my style.

Day 3

I literally did nothing that day. It felt so good. Sometimes it is  just the best thing to forget everything for a while and to unwind completely. I has such a good time during my vacay and felt kind of depressed about having to go back to work. So I decided not to do anything that day. I watched movies an read…painted my nails. It was a great day. I had to let go of my To-Do-List, bu it felt good doing it and I tried really hard to not feel guilty about it. It is so important to take time for yourself and to give yourself time to rest and just be.

Day 4

I am so often afraid to do what I really want to do because I´m afraid. That day I decided to make a step forward an to send my story to a writing contest in Germany. I haven´t heard from them, so it might be that my article will never be read by another soul than me, but it felt great to make a move and pursue my dream. I was so happy about it and hope this was  just the start of following my dreams and goals with more power from now on.

Day 5

Kombucha is super trendy right now, but it is not new at all. This tea mixture goes back to ancient China to about 2,000 years ago, where it was regularly consumed to reduce inflammation.  It has also been used to fight acne, fatigue, hypertension, headaches, and constipation.

Kombucha is basically a sugary tea, which is then fermented with the help of a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. After the fermentation process it becomes carbonated and contains vinegar, B vitamins, enzymes, probiotics and a high concentration of acid. Which contain bacteria that are known as “cellulose-producing bacteria,” acting as shields to cells.

Was really happy that day to have a kombucha that was not industrially made.

Day 6

I love Oprah´s podcast!

It makes me happy, the people inspire me and it also shows me that I´m not alone…that there are so many people out there thinking like me and wanting the same things.

This is how it is discribed on her webpage: Awaken, discover and connect to the deeper meaning of the world around you with SuperSoul. Hear Oprah’s personal selection of her interviews with thought-leaders, best-selling authors, spiritual luminaries, as well as health and wellness experts. All designed to light you up, guide you through life’s big questions and help bring you one step closer to your best self.  http://www.supersoul.tv/

Day 7

Fwfg means “find what feel good” and that is a phrase that Adriene Mishler uses a lot. It is her motto.

I lover her and the way she teaches – she also includes a lot of self-love and self-discovery topics in her classes. She just seems to speak directly to my heart.

She as a web page and also a youtube channel with free yoga videos, I also receive her weekly email. It is abolutly a must! Her emails are love letters and make you feel good, they are encouraging and just hug you when you are reading them.

I wrote an article about it, read more here:   https://thetinnituslife.com/2017/08/20/yoga-as-tinnitus-relief/

Day 8

This was my first Tibetan 5 Rites class ever. I really enjoyed it, we did a lot of other stuff also, we worked a little with tapping and affirmations and we took some time to meditate.

The 5  Tibetan Rites are a form of Tibetan yoga said to be more than 2,500 year old,  Peter Kelder published the exercises for the first time in this book called The Eye of Revelation in 1939. Kelder claims this series of exercises was used by Tibetan monks to live long, vibrant and healthy lives.

I was really grateful for the experience and will go back for sure!

Day 9

This was already my second meditation challange, I just love the combination of Oprah and Deepak. I was just so thankful that they offer some free guided meditations. It helps me to stay focused and to actually stay on top of my meditation game.

Their meditations always inculde Oprah talking about the daily topic and then Deepak leading the meditation. The topics are connected and include a message of the day, a centering thought and a sanskrit mantra. That mantra you use then through out the meditation, when claming music is played in the background. If you use it on the computer, there is an option to reflect on the topic as well as on the meditation with a little diary, which comes with a few questions.

Day 10

We had been working a lot and having a nice night together with wine, good food and music was just perfect!

I love it when we have nights like that!

Day 11

I love salads. I have always loved salads, but I hate to prepare them. Not even sure why, I always feel like it takes for ever and you need to chop all the veggies…..I just don´t like it.

So I was so grateful to eat out and to have a delicous salad with an amazing dressing!

Day 12

I just noticed that day how much I have changed latly. Maybe it is not visual to some, but I feel so different.

I have changed on the inside  – I just felt so thankful that all the hard work on myself is paying off.

I have worked so hard to become more positive to, be calmer and to feel generally more happy…..it feels like I am on the right path. So grateful my chosen path seems to be working!

Day 13

I went to a ton of workshops in the last few months – this one was called “Live your calling” and was just what I needed.

I was never sure what I should do with my life – at least that is what I always thought. I was just a lost soul, wandering around to find its purpose.

But through the workshop I am sure, that I already know what I want I´m just to affraid to really persue it as I´m scared. Scared it might not work out, scared to try, scared….

So…now I just need to give myself that push and start little by little working on my goals and dreams.  It was a great experience!

Day 14

Well, that picture went kind of wrong, what do you say?

I went to a Temazcal Ceremony, it was an amazing experience. Temazcal entails entering a stone igloo with a bathing suit and just literally sweating it out. It is guided by shamens, who pore essential oils on the hot stones and they also chant, sing….plus suggest other activities to help the process of letting

Day 15

After reading the Medical Medium books I have been trying to eat healthier snacks.

It has not been an easy journey as I absolutly love, love, love chips! So I have been trying to find snacks which are not as salty and healty.

So having nuts is an alternative I can tolerate let´s say. I still really, really miss chips, but this is something I can have and not feel like I want to go to the store once I have finished my nuts. Nuts are also super nutritive for our bodies.

Cashews for example vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These include vitamins E, K, and B6 as well as minerals like copper, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, iron, and selenium

Day 16

Marci Baron is an energy healer, on her instagram account she always puts up a lot of quotes and tips on how to live a better live. Or let´s say a more mindful life with aligned energy levels.

This is how the Huffington Post describes her: “Marci Baron is a Homeward Bound Guide, specializing in Energy Clearing & Transformation. She believes that home means arriving at who you are, without the labels, without the roles, without the stuff. It’s the place where you finally land after searching outside of yourself for so long. Day 17

A lot of times when I think about my past I think about what I regret and what I should have done differently. My thoughts revolve around those situations ALL THE TIME.

I forget every so often that I also have an  uncountable amount of great memories. What am I saying? Amazing memories!

Trying to change my life to the positive also includes letting go of the negative experiences and being able to remember the good ones without judging them.

Day 18

Mo:Me is a mindfulness project formed by Niamh.

She also suffers from tinnitus and hearing loss, which lead her to start this project. She makes flashcards for adults, which are quick daily reminders to live in the present moment, to stay mindful.

” Life is all about how we deal with things and that is how MoMe was born. I wanted to share some of the things I had learned with my family and friends, and with a creative mindset that wasn’t used to slowing down easily, I realised that if like children we were taught to learn some of these quotes then they might just sink in if we take the time to appreciate them.” ( http://www.mome.ie/about-1/  )

Day 19

Nature makes me feel good – it makes me feel free!

I just don´t seem so spend enough time outside, so I was super happy to have taken the time to just stop. To do nothing, but stay in the moment and enjoy the moment in nature.

The fresh air, the noise of birds singing. . . it just sends out tranquility and peace.

Day 20

I have found Louise Hay a few years ago, at first I wasn´t ready to hear her message, but then I rediscovered her and devoured her books as well as her message.

Hay House is the publishing company she build from the ground up. It publishes  mainly new thought and self-help books. Their instagram posts display their authors and spread minfulness messages.

Their messages have touched my heart and have initiated my spiritual growth!

https://www.hayhouse.com/

Day 21

Like I said, I´m trying to have healthier snacks.

What are healthier snacks?

Gluten-free, sugar-free and vegan!

I made this non-bake pie and it was super easy. I just mixed nuts with grapes and raisins for the crust. On the crust I put an apricot purée and

toped it off with thin apple slices.

Delicious and quick!

Day 22

I have never liked the journey,  I always wanted to be there already!

So often I hate where I´m at right now, I recent the live I´m living and everything in it.

So I have been trying to accept my journey. To see that I´m where I am at right now because of past desicions. Those I took from a place, where this was the best thing I could do. From a place, where it was in line with my growth at that time.

I can always outgrow it, but I need to accept the current state and go from there. Be ok with the now to take the right desicions for a better future or a future that is more in line with what I really want.

Day 23

This blog post is about how I always thought that tinnitus has taken me to a dark place and made me really negative.

But that was already there before, deep inside me – so the ear ringing just brought it out in me. It was actually a good thing, because I was finally able to confront myself, to confront my fears and my demons.

I´m so grateful for that path I have taken the last few months. It was about time to not stuff everything down anymore, to let it out, to let it free and to face my old emotions.

Day 24

In August I´ll be going to Germany and I couldn´t be happier.

I love my hometown.  It is a small village in bavaria, everybody knows each other there and it is super peaceful.

There is a river close by and I just feel really safe there. A lot of my friends still live there and of course my famliy.

I´m so grateful to call such a wonderful place my home and to always be able to go back there.

Day 25

I´ve read two of the Medical Medium books about the healing power of plants:     https://www.medicalmedium.com/

I started following his recommendations to improve ones health and I can feel changes already. It is a journey for sure, but I think it is totally worth it.

Read more about my experience here:  https://thetinnituslife.com/2018/03/31/tinitus-and-food-the-28-day-healing-cleanse/

( By the way…how many times did I use the number 23???)

Day 26

I just love fruit!

I haven´t had a lot here in Cusco as it is super expensive here. I just started to have more fruit again ( decided the money is worth it) and it literally changed a lot for me. My stomach feels so much better and  I don´t have the typical afternoon down…..

This is persimmon and I was so happy to have found it here. I ate it a lot in Germany and just recently saw it at a market in Cusco.

Day 27

Even if there is just a short moment – it is good to take some time to soak in some sun.

Vitamin D is just one part of it, it makes you feel good and lightens the mood.

It wasn´t until after I had posted the picture that I noticed the writing in the back. My boyfriend had made a joke about that photo, which I just got then.

Nevertheless, being out even if it is just on the bench right across the stress of your house is totally worth it.

Day 28

I love lazy sundays!

It is the best feeling in the world to just take time for yourself and to do nothing.

It is something you should do regularily. I try to do it at least for half a day each week. It helps me to unwind and to let go of the lists my mind constantly makes.

Day 29

Oh I was so proud that this article includes videos!

Pranayama has become a big part of my daily routine and I just felt like it was not enough to show it with pictures. So I made short videos.

I hope you liked it!

Day 30

Drawing was always something that has clamed me down.

In oder to draw a nice picture you need a lot of time and you need to dedicate yourself to it.

I haven´t had time for that in the past few years, so my sister bought me this coloring book. First I didn´t really like it as I thought it was for kids. But it is really fun, it is quick and it still has the same effect; it clames me down and relaxes me!

Day 31

I saw this and it just made so much sense to me in that moment!

So a double negative is a positive. I think we all know that rule, but we usually only apply it in math. Right?!

So if you become aware of a negative behavior or a negative situation, you create a double negative. That turns it into something postive as you only can transform it to something better if you are aware of what is going on.

Once you are aware of what is happening, you can do something about it. You can turn it into something better, in something positive, in what you want to situation to be.

Awareness is the first step!

That was my month of gratefulness! What did it do for me?

I saw that there were so many things in my life I liked and that I was really grateful for! It showed me that I have no reason to be depressed or sad all the time. I could finally see that it was true, that every situation has something positive! AND that I can change every situation, I just have to be aware of what is going on and can do my best to form my future in a different way – a way I want it to go.

I feel like a have a more positive outlook on my future. Before it was more about surviving the day with tinnnitus and now it seems to be about what I really want. What I want my life to be.

It is a nice feeling to see life full with opportunities again.
